While Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is visiting the US, Alphabet’s Google said it will invest $1 billion (HKD 7.8 billion) to lay two undersea fiber-optic cables to improve digital connections between the US and Japan.
Google said that one of the fiber-optic cables will connect the US, Japan, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam; the other will connect the US, Japan, and Hawaii.
Last year, the US said it would jointly fund two undersea fiber-optic cables to be built by Google to connect the US territory of Guam and Pacific islands such as Fiji.
Google said in a blog post that the company will invest funds to build another extended fiber-optic cable to connect Hawaii, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam. It also said that this move will enhance the reliability of digital communications between the US and Japan as well as with various countries in the Pacific. Companies in Japan such as NEC and KDDI, as well as Citadel Pacific in the Philippines, will also assist in the construction of the cables.
