iOS 17.5: The web side-loading function is officially opened!

Early this morning, Apple pushed the iOS 17.5 Beta2 test version update to developer preview users. Users who have registered for the Apple Beta version software program only need to open Settings – General – Software Update to upgrade online via OTA to the latest iOS 17.5 test version.

The size of this update package is about 543M, and the internal version number is (21F5058e). Like iOS 17.4, the iOS 17.5 version is mainly to comply with the Digital Markets Act of the European Union and to adjust the side-loading function for iPhone users in the European Union region.

The first test version of iOS 17.5 introduces support for web-based side-loading, allowing developers to directly provide the download path for their application downloads on their websites. And starting from the second test version, iPhone users can officially download applications from EU websites.

Like the iOS 17.4 change that adds alternative app markets, this feature is only limited to iPhones and can only be used in the European Union. Developers who offer applications must have been members of the Apple Developer Program for two consecutive years or longer, and must have had more than 1 million first installations on iOS in the previous year to offer application downloads.

All applications downloaded from the website to the iPhone must be submitted to Apple’s notarization process. Although these applications do not need to pay any commissions to Apple, developers need to pay a 0.5 euro “core technology fee”.

In addition, some developers found in the code of iOS 17.5 that Apple is about to introduce support for third-party project trackers, which is a feature that Apple has been developing since last year.

It is reported that Apple and Google have developed a cross-platform solution for sending unwanted tracking alerts, and it seems that iOS 17.5 will let iPhone users know when there are third-party trackers nearby.

“You can disable this item and prevent it from sharing its location with the owner. To do this, follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of this item on the website,” the updated iOS 17.5 code said.
