Heavyweight US congressional senators said that when the Senate is considering the bill involving the mandatory sale of the short-video sharing platform TikTok by the Chinese-owned controlling shareholder ByteDance, it may change the sale time limit from six months to one year.
The US House of Representatives passed the relevant bill on the 13th of last month, setting the time limit for the sale of TikTok to six months. The bill has been submitted to the Senate, but the Senate has not yet started to handle the relevant procedures.
Maria Cantwell, the chairperson of the Senate Commerce Committee responsible for handling the bill, told reporters on Wednesday that she tends to change the sale time limit from six months to one year, believing that this move will help the sale action to ultimately be successful. However, she pointed out that it is necessary to discuss with other senators before the relevant idea can be implemented.
A congressional aide confirmed that the legislators have discussed the relevant idea, but there is no final decision. If the sale time limit is extended to one year, the transaction will not be able to be completed until after the November presidential election.
