TikTok rolls out a new version of TikTok Lite, and the EU urges to present risk assessment.

The short-video platform TikTok under the ByteDance launched a new version of TikTok Lite in France and Spain this month. Due to concerns that the application may have an impact on the mental health of children and users, the European Commission said that it has requested TikTok to present the risk assessment of the new application within 24 hours.

Reuters reported that Thierry Breton, the European Commission’s industry policy executive, made the above request based on the Digital Services Act (DSA), and two months ago, he had already launched an investigation into whether TikTok may violate the Digital Services Act.

TikTok Lite is an application with new features, with the main target being users over the age of 18, and it was launched in France and Spain this month.

The European Commission said that before the launch of TikTok Lite in the 27 EU countries, it has requested TikTok to provide information to obtain more details of the risk assessment that it should complete.

Reuters quoted the contents of a European Commission document, which are related to the potential impact of the Task and Reward Lite program on minors, as well as the potential impact on users’ mental health, especially in terms of possibly stimulating addictive behaviors. TikTok must provide the risk assessment of TikTok Lite within 24 hours and provide other information requested by the commission before April 26. After that, the commission will analyze TikTok’s reply and then evaluate the next steps.

The European Commission also requested detailed information on the measures the company has taken to reduce systemic risks.
